Made for phones
Chatw is built to work on a phone screen. It runs in Safari, Chrome, Samsung Internet and Firefox. Open chatw.org, pick a name and you are chatting. Nothing to download.
Start on your phone
Open chatw.org in your phone's browser and confirm you are 18 or older. Type a display name, pick a gender tag and your country, and choose a room. Your country is filled in for you from your connection, and you can change it.
Tap the Messages button at the top for your private chats and group chats. Tap a name in the room or in the people list to write to someone.
On iPhone
Open chatw.org in Safari. To get an icon on your home screen, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. It then opens full screen, like an app.
On iPhone, the home screen icon may not share storage with Safari, so you can show up as a new person the first time you open it. An optional account with a username and password brings your name across.
Photos from the iPhone camera roll work, including HEIC photos, which are turned into a normal picture before they are sent. iPhone videos work too. Voice notes, pictures and voice calls all work once you allow the microphone or camera.
On Android
Open chatw.org in Chrome, or install the Chatw app from the Chatw app page. The app is under 1 MB and is not on Google Play, so your phone asks you to allow installs from your browser. With the app, long-press a GIF on any website, tap Share image and pick Chatw to send it, still moving.
Everything on a small screen
Switch between the rooms, your private chats and your group chats with one tap. Swipe a private chat to the right to go back.
Take a photo with the in-chat camera. On a phone it gets a Taken live badge, so people know it is a fresh photo and not a saved one. Record a voice note of up to one minute or a camera clip of up to 30 seconds right from the message box.
Easy on your data
Large photos are made smaller on your phone before they are uploaded, so they send faster and use less data. GIFs and moving pictures are sent as they are, so they keep moving.
Each picture or video can be up to 50 MB, and you can attach up to 4 files to one message. If the room is busy, you can turn off the soft tick sound for every room message in the settings.
Waiting for a reply
Chatw does not send push notifications. Sounds and alerts work while the site is open. Phones often pause a page you are not looking at, so if you are waiting for someone, keep Chatw open or check back.
Private chats and group chats stay in Messages, so you can pick up where you left off. A chat with no new message for 30 days is deleted.
Safety on a phone
A phone makes it easy to send a photo in a second. Think before you do. Anyone can take a screenshot, even of a view-once picture.
Do not share your number, your address or other apps you use with someone you just met. Block or report anyone who pushes for them.
Your chats stay on your phone
Without an account, your name and chats belong to the browser on that phone. Add a username and password if you want the same name on a computer too. There is still no email.
