Your own space, in seconds
On Chatw you can start a group chat with up to 300 people, counting you. Pick the people, name the group, and start talking. No one needs an account or an email.
A group is the step between the busy public room and a one-to-one chat. It works well when a few people in the room keep talking to each other, or when you want a space around one topic.
How to start a group
Open Messages and press New group. Give the group a name of up to 40 characters, then choose Private or Public.
Tick the people you want to add. The list shows people who are online and people who have messaged you. A private group needs at least one other person. A public group can start with just you, and people join from Find groups.
When the group is made, a line in the chat says who joined, so everyone can see who is in it.
Private or public
A private group is only for the people you add. A public group shows in Find groups, so anyone can find it and join. Add a password of at least 4 characters to a public group if you want to choose who gets in.
The person who made the group can change it from private to public, or add, change or remove the password later.
Who can be added
You cannot add someone who has blocked you, or someone you blocked. If a person only takes message requests, you can add them only after they have accepted a private chat with you. Nobody gets pulled into a group by a stranger.
Running the group
Only the person who made the group can manage it. In Manage members they can search for people by name and add them, or remove a member. When someone is removed, everyone in the group sees a line that says so.
Anyone can leave a group at any time with the Leave group button. If the creator leaves, the group keeps going, but nobody can add or remove people any more.
Everything works in groups
Send text, pictures, videos, GIFs and voice notes. React with emojis, edit or delete your own messages, and reply to a message. Tap a member's name at the top of the group to open their profile.
Start a voice call with the whole group. Every member who is online gets a ring and can join. A chat can have one call going at a time.
Find groups to join
Open Find groups to see public groups, with the ones that were active most recently first. Search by name, see how many people are in each group, and look for the lock that marks a password. Join with a tap, or enter the password.
Too many wrong password tries in a few minutes make you wait before you can try again. Group chats show above your private messages, so you can always get back to them.
How long a group lasts
Each group keeps its last 200 messages. A group with no new message for 30 days is deleted, together with its pictures and clips. When the last member leaves, the group is deleted at once.
Staying safe in groups
The name of a public group is shown to everyone in Find groups, so keep personal details out of it. Anyone who joins a public group without a password can read what is posted there. For a group of people you know, keep it private or share the password only in private messages.
You can block and report anyone in a group, the same as in the room. When an account is reported, staff can open its recent group chats to check what happened.
